If the Yale smart lock is showing a low-battery warning, beeping, responding slowly or failing to operate correctly, the batteries may need to be replaced.
This guide applies only to the Yale smart-lock model installed at the property that uses four AA batteries. Other Yale models may use a different number or type of battery.
Routine replacement of user-accessible batteries may be the tenant’s responsibility under the tenancy agreement. Please follow the steps below before reporting a fault.
Important Security and Safety Notice
```- Keep the door open while replacing and testing the batteries to avoid being locked out.
- Replace all four batteries at the same time.
- Use four new standard AA alkaline batteries.
- Do not mix old and new batteries.
- Do not mix different battery brands or battery types.
- Insert each battery in the correct positive and negative direction.
- Do not remove the complete lock, external handle or any wiring.
- Do not force the battery cover if it does not release normally.
- If the batteries are leaking or the compartment is corroded, stop and report the issue.
Video Guide
The battery-replacement section begins at approximately 2 minutes and 55 seconds.
How to Replace the Batteries
1. Keep the door open
Open the door before starting. Do not replace or test the batteries while standing outside with the door closed.
Keeping the door open allows you to test the lock without the risk of being locked out.
2. Locate the internal battery cover
The battery compartment is normally located on the inside part of the Yale lock.
Check the cover before attempting to remove it. Depending on the model, the cover may slide, lift or release using a small catch.
3. Remove the battery cover
Carefully remove the back cover following the method shown in the video.
Do not force the cover or use a knife, screwdriver or other sharp tool unless the manufacturer’s instructions specifically require a suitable tool.
4. Check the position of the existing batteries
Before removing the batteries, take a clear photo showing their position and polarity. The positive and negative symbols should also be marked inside the battery compartment.
5. Remove all four batteries
Remove all four existing AA batteries. Do not replace only one or two batteries.
Inspect the compartment for:
- Battery leakage
- White or green corrosion
- Damaged contacts
- Moisture inside the compartment
- Loose or broken parts
If any of these problems are visible, do not fit new batteries. Take clear photos and open a maintenance task.
6. Insert four new AA alkaline batteries
Insert four new standard AA alkaline batteries. Make sure every battery follows the positive and negative markings inside the compartment.
All four batteries should be:
- New
- The same brand
- The same battery type
- Installed at the same time
7. Allow the lock to power up
Once the batteries have been installed, wait for the lock to power up. The lock may produce a sound or light indication.
Do not press several buttons immediately. Allow a short period for the lock to complete its start-up process.
8. Replace the battery cover
Refit the internal battery cover securely. Make sure it is correctly aligned and fully closed.
Do not trap any battery, wire or internal component underneath the cover.
Test the Lock Before Closing the Door
The smart lock must be tested while the door remains open.
- Operate the internal handle or thumb-turn.
- Check that the lock mechanism moves normally.
- Test the keypad, key card, tag or Yale app, depending on the model.
- Check that the lock responds without a low-battery warning.
- Test the locking and unlocking operation several times while the door is open.
Only close the door once you are satisfied that the lock is responding correctly and you have a working method of unlocking it.
If the Low-Battery Warning Continues
Check that:
- All four batteries are new
- Standard alkaline batteries have been used
- The batteries are inserted in the correct direction
- The battery contacts are clean and undamaged
- The battery cover is fitted correctly
- The lock has been tested while the door is open
If the warning continues, do not repeatedly remove and reinstall the batteries. Open a maintenance task with the required information.
When to Report the Issue Immediately
Please open an urgent maintenance task if:
- The lock does not power up with four new batteries
- The lock cannot secure or release the door
- The battery cover is damaged or will not close
- The battery compartment is corroded or wet
- The batteries are leaking
- The internal or external handle is loose
- The lock repeatedly jams
- The keypad, key card, tag or app no longer operates the lock
- The door cannot be secured, creating a security risk
- You are locked outside the property
Photos and Information Required
When opening a maintenance task, please provide:
- A clear photo of the complete Yale smart lock
- A photo of the internal battery compartment
- A photo showing the four new batteries installed
- A photo of the battery brand and packaging
- A photo of the lock make and model, if visible
- A short video showing the fault
- Confirmation that all four batteries were replaced together
- Confirmation that standard AA alkaline batteries were used
- Confirmation that the lock was tested while the door was open
- Details of any warning sound, flashing light or app notification
- Confirmation of whether the door can currently be locked and unlocked
Providing this information helps us determine whether the issue is caused by the batteries, battery contacts, smart-lock electronics, handle or door-lock mechanism.
Possible Contractor Charges
If a locksmith or contractor attends and the only issue is that the four user-replaceable batteries were flat, incorrectly installed or not replaced as requested, the call-out charge may be recharged to the tenant.
If the issue is caused by a defective smart lock, damaged electronics, failed battery contacts, faulty handle or another lock problem not caused by tenant misuse, the landlord will normally be responsible for arranging the repair.
Security faults should always be reported promptly. Do not leave the property unsecured because of concern about a possible contractor charge.
