Spotlight Bulb Not Working? Safe Replacement Guide
If a ceiling spotlight has stopped working, the bulb may need to be replaced. The two most common replaceable spotlight bulbs are GU10 and MR16.
Tenants are generally expected to replace standard consumable light bulbs during the tenancy. However, you should only replace the bulb itself. Do not remove the complete light fitting, disconnect wiring, or attempt an electrical repair.
Some modern spotlights contain an integrated LED rather than a replaceable bulb. If there is no removable bulb, or the complete fitting appears faulty, please open a maintenance task instead.
Important Electrical Safety Notice
```- Switch the light off before touching the bulb or fitting.
- Where possible, isolate the lighting circuit at the fuse box/consumer unit.
- Allow the bulb to cool completely before removing it.
- Use a stable stepladder and do not stand on chairs, beds, or unstable furniture.
- Make sure your hands are dry.
- Do not touch exposed wiring or remove the complete ceiling fitting.
- Do not force a bulb, retaining ring, or fitting.
- If the fitting is damaged, loose, burnt, sparking, or showing exposed wires, stop and report it immediately.
Identify the Type of Spotlight Bulb
GU10 spotlight bulb
A GU10 bulb has two short pins with wider ends. It is normally inserted into the holder and secured by pushing and twisting.
MR16 spotlight bulb
An MR16 bulb, commonly using a GU5.3 base, has two thin straight pins. It normally pulls directly out of the holder rather than twisting.
Buy the Correct Replacement
```Before purchasing a replacement, remove the old bulb and check its markings. The replacement should have:
- The same cap or connector type: GU10 or MR16/GU5.3
- The correct operating voltage
- A wattage that does not exceed the maximum permitted by the fitting
- A suitable shape and size for the spotlight fitting
- Dimmable compatibility if the light is controlled by a dimmer switch
Take the old bulb with you when purchasing the replacement, or take a clear photo of the bulb and its printed specifications.
```How the Bulb May Be Held in Place
Before removing the bulb, check how it is secured inside the spotlight. Two common systems are a snap retaining ring and a twist bezel.
Snap retaining ring
A snap ring is a thin metal retaining clip positioned in front of the bulb. It normally has two small ends or clips that can be gently pressed together to release the ring.
Support the bulb with one hand while removing the ring so the bulb does not fall.
Twist bezel or twist ring
Some spotlight fittings have a front bezel or ring that twists to release the bulb. Hold the ring carefully and turn it anticlockwise until it releases.
Do not twist or pull the complete ceiling fitting.
How to Replace a GU10 Bulb
- Switch off the light and allow the bulb to cool.
- Remove the retaining ring or twist bezel where applicable.
- Hold the front of the GU10 bulb securely.
- Gently push the bulb towards the holder.
- Turn it anticlockwise until it releases.
- Carefully pull the bulb out of the fitting.
- Align the pins of the new GU10 bulb with the holder.
- Push the bulb in and turn it clockwise until it locks into place.
- Refit the retaining ring or bezel.
How to Replace an MR16 Bulb
- Switch off the light and allow the bulb to cool.
- Remove the retaining ring or twist bezel where applicable.
- Support the bulb so it does not fall.
- Pull the bulb straight out of the two-pin holder.
- Do not twist the thin pins.
- Align the two pins of the replacement bulb with the holder.
- Push the bulb gently and evenly into place.
- Refit the retaining ring or bezel.
Test the New Bulb
Once the bulb and retaining ring have been fitted securely, restore the electricity and switch the light on.
If the replacement bulb does not work, switch the electricity off again and check that:
- The bulb is the correct type and voltage
- The bulb is fitted securely
- The lighting circuit has not tripped
- Other lights on the same circuit are working
When to Open a Maintenance Task
Please open a maintenance task if:
- The spotlight contains an integrated LED and has no replaceable bulb
- The new bulb does not work after being fitted correctly
- The bulb holder is damaged or hanging loose
- The retaining ring or bezel is broken or missing
- The fitting is burnt, discoloured, sparking, or making unusual noises
- There are exposed wires
- The complete fitting comes away from the ceiling
- The circuit trips when the light is switched on
- The spotlight is in a bathroom or wet area and you are unsure how to access it safely
Photos and Information Required
When opening a maintenance task, please provide:
- A clear photo of the complete spotlight fitting
- A close-up photo of the bulb and retaining ring
- A photo of the old bulb showing its markings
- A photo of the replacement bulb and packaging
- Confirmation that the replacement bulb is the correct type and voltage
- Confirmation that the lighting circuit has been checked
- Details of whether other lights on the same circuit are working
- A photo of any damage, burning, loose parts, or exposed wiring
Possible Contractor Charges
If an electrician or contractor attends and the only issue is a standard replaceable bulb that has failed, or the incorrect replacement bulb has been fitted, the call-out charge may be recharged to the tenant.
If the issue is caused by a faulty integrated LED unit, damaged holder, fixed wiring, transformer, driver, switch, or another electrical fault not caused by tenant use, the landlord will normally be responsible for arranging the repair.
